Craven Community College (Craven CC) students Sherry Riley, Catherine Talbert, and Naomi Sharpe were presented with scholarships from the New Bern Woman's Club (NBWC) on May 3. The NBWC advocates for local students by easing financial burdens and encouraging women to reach their educational goals.

Riley was presented with the 2023 NBWC Memorial Scholarship for $2,500, while Talbert was awarded with $1,000. The Memorial Scholarship was created in 2006 to encourage a deserving woman with financial needs who desires to improve her life by returning to school to continue her education.

Sharpe was presented with the 2023 NBWC Education Department Scholarship for $2,500. The Education Department Scholarship is given to a deserving student for outstanding academic achievement.

"When speaking to each of these women, they all expressed their thankfulness and were so uplifted," said Jeannie Billingsley of the NBWC. "It’s a great feeling to realize how these scholarships can change the trajectory of people’s lives in a positive way."

The NBWC is comprised of dedicated women who are committed to making Eastern North Carolina a better place to live and visit. Since 1905, the club has worked hard to serve the community by supporting the arts, providing educational opportunities for local students, promoting healthy lifestyles, encouraging civic involvement, and working toward community understanding. They have been a steadfast supporter of Craven CC students since 2005.
